Experts unite to end poverty pay in fashion

Despite years of discussion about addressing poverty wages in the garment sector, progress has been painfully slow. In light of this, civil society organisations have been increasingly calling for legally binding measures to ensure workers are paid a living wage within global supply chains. A coalition of stakeholders, including citizens, civil society organisations, trade unions, and lawyers are now joining forces to bring the first ever European Citizen’s Initiative on Living Wages in the Garment, Textile and Footwear Sector, that will present a clear, united voice to the EU for the urgent change that is required.

On February 22 we were pleased to host a side session to the 2022 OECD Forum on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector. Our session, “Beyond Voluntary: Civil Society Proposals to Address Poverty Wages in Global Garment Supply Chains,” brought together a range of experts to explore the legal proposals that the coalition recommends and to present a united voice calling for a legislative solution to the problem of poverty wages in the garment and footwear industry.
