Our Sisters' Opportunity

We are proud to work in partnership with Our Sisters' Opportunity, a female-led grassroots organisation from Rwanda that creates enduring opportunities for young women through education, economic empowerment, and social change.

Rwanda has made good progress in gender equality. It ranks amongst the world’s top 10 countries for gender parity and is the first country in the world with a female-majority parliament.

Yet many women still face immense challenges. Gender-based violence remains a reality for many women and girls around the nation, with over 23% aged between 15 and 49 reporting experiences of physical and sexual violence by partners. In the workplace, 76% of women are in vulnerable employment, dealing with issues including inadequate pay, poor working conditions, limited access to resources, and discrimination.

Our Sisters’ Opportunity are working to tackle these challenges in Rwanda. The grassroots organisation takes a holistic approach to creating a safer environment for women and girls by connecting survivors of gender-based violence to medical and psychosocial support services, helping vulnerable women gain financial independence and encouraging community engagement.

With support from The Circle, Our Sisters’ Opportunity is providing six months of comprehensive vocational and entrepreneurship training to 140 girls and young mothers aged between 16 and 30. The programme will enable graduates to establish a sustainable start-up, enhancing their livelihoods and allowing them to support their families.
