Awer Women Empowerment

We are proud to work in partnership with Awer Women Empowerment, a feminist organisation advocating for the rights of indigenous women while fighting to eradicate and prevent gender-based violence in Kenya.

Women and girls are at higher risk during times of conflict, with over 70% experiencing gender-based violence in a crisis setting. With ongoing violent extremism and conflict in the northeastern and southeastern regions of Kenya, Awer Women’s Empowerment provides a lifeline for women who have faced the horrors of conflict, sexual exploitation, forced marriage, human trafficking, and forced labour in the region.

Founded by two survivors of war violence, Awer Women’s Empowerment is a feminist organisation advocating for the rights of indigenous women while fighting to eradicate and prevent gender-based violence in Kenya. It aims to ensure the safety and dignity of Awer women by providing refuge for those who escape conflict, delivering psychosocial and medical care as well as legal support, housing assistance, and vocational training.

The Circle is supporting Awer Women’s Empowerment to train 30 women who will act as advocates in their communities. This project amplifies the voices of indigenous women, giving them a supportive platform to create change in their own community. The trainees will reach out to survivors of violence, engage with their community, influence cultural leaders, and collaborate with the government to drive an end to gender-based violence.
