Since the murderous attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023 and the subsequent bombardment of Gaza by Israel, The Circle has been calling for the release of the hostages and a permanent ceasefire whilst supporting partners on the ground in Gaza.
At this stage of the conflict however, as both Israeli actions and international inaction continue to inflict a devastating toll on the civilian population of Gaza, and with the whole population of Gaza now on the brink of starvation, we at The Circle believe, like others, that we are watching a genocide unfold.
Over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed, with widespread destruction of homes, hospitals, and essential infrastructure. Israel has inflicted conditions which bring about the physical destruction of the population—through forced displacement, starvation, denial of medical care, and systematic targeting of children and pregnant women. Additionally, public statements by senior Israeli officials advocating for the annihilation or forced transfer of Palestinians reflect what many, including us, interpret as having the effect of genocidal intent.
The Government of Israel and world leaders need to stop this horror immediately.
We call on world leaders, including the UK government, to ensure that they are not complicit in genocide by refusing to enable the actions of the Israeli government, refusing to arm the instruments of genocide or otherwise indirectly support genocide, and use every possible measure to stop the genocide.
We reiterate our demand for the siege to end and unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance delivered by impartial agencies, the release of all hostages, and an immediate ceasefire leading to sustainable peace.
