In conflict zones like Gaza, journalism too often becomes a life-threatening pursuit. Local women journalists tend to be the most vulnerable as many cannot leave and must live with the consequences of violence.
”Nowhere in Gaza is truly safe,” says a representative from the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network (MCJN), a Circle partner supporting women journalists living and working in the Arab world.
Like many in Gaza, local journalists have lost their homes, loved ones and their livelihood. Many have multiple dependents including young children, elderly parents, disabled or injured relatives to care for too. They are all suffering severely from a lack of basics, including safe shelter, water, food and medical supplies, as well as access to electricity and internet.
The MCJN has provided emergency financial aid and assistance to support its members in Gaza, however due to the severe lack of items entering the Strip, inflation is rife and there is much to do.
Today, we highlight the reports done by some of the MCJN members, giving sharp focus to the humanitarian catastrophe, especially for women and girls.
As a global feminist organisation, The Circle joins calls for international humanitarian law to be upheld. This includes the protection of journalists, condemning the use of rape as a weapon of war, and confronting violence against women and girls everywhere. We reiterate our calls that a ceasefire is critical.
